The Upstate Jobs Crisis

June 13, 2013

Upstate New York's lingering economic weakness was the focus of a public forum conducted by the Empire Center in Albany on June 3.  Some key take-aways:

  • a presentation by E.J. McMahon, Empire Center senior fellow, detailing the growth divergence between upstate and downstate New York -- and pointing to obvious areas in need of improvement.
  • edited text of remarks by keynote speaker Carl Schramm, University Professor at Syracuse University and noted expert on economic growth, entrepreneurialism and innovation.
  • a report by economist Diana Furchtgott-Roth, a Manhattan Institute senior fellow, on the personal income gains that New york counties could expect if hydro-fracking of natural gas deposits in the Marcellus Shale region is allowed to go forward.
