South Onondaga, NY—The Onondaga Central School Board offered Superintendent Joseph Rotella $185,000 plus health insurance for himself and his wife if he would “retire” with two years remaining on his contract.
The board did not discuss the “retirement incentive agreement” in public before voting 6-0 Tuesday to approve it. Board Member Elizabeth Crump abstained. As board president, she signed Rotella’s employment contract with the district in 2010.
Rotella, 58, accepted the offer and said he will leave the district on Aug. 15.
He declined to say what led to the board’s decision. The incentive gives the board a way to save money, Rotella said.
“The board was elected by the community and they chose the direction. There are changes that they would like to see,” he said.
“Now is a time where the people let the dust settle,” and the focus should be placed on the students, Rotella said…..
