The Village of Wellsville has New York’s highest combined property tax burden, according to the Empire Center for Public Policy.
The Empire Center is a project of the Manhattan Institute, a conservative, free-market oriented think tank.
Less than a week before state-wide voting on school district budget propositions, Empire Center is spotlighting the overall property tax burden in thousands of communities across New York state. The group’s database calculates the combined property tax rate and total average property tax bill, including taxes levied by schools, counties and local governments, in every New York locality from 2009-11. The center’s data can be utilized to calculate the “all-in” property tax bill in a given locality, or to compare property tax burdens among multiple localities.
According to Empire Center figures for 2011, Village of Wellsville taxpayers bear the state’s heaviest property tax burden, with an effective rate of $62.63 per $1,000 of assessed property value. That’s about 75 percent higher that the regional median. Of the top 20 property tax rates in Western New York, 19 are municipalities in Allegany County….
