The Saratoga Springs Housing Authority Board of Directors decided Thursday to reevaluate Executive Director Ed Sypchalski’s salary in the wake of public outcry over pay raises. His salary has doubled over the past six years.
“We felt the salary Ed was making was reasonable, but many people don’t,” said Board Chairman Dennis Brunelle.
Spychalski’s 2011 compensation is $151,956, not including benefits, including the use of a publicly-owned vehicle. His starting salary in November 2006 was $74,777 and he has received $77,179 in pay raises since then.
“A lot of people are bringing that into question, especially at City Hall,” Brunelle said Thursday.
He said the board will conduct a comparability study to decide what job Spychalski’s could be compared to. A study conducted in 1981 compared his salary to the salary of a principal at the Saratoga Springs City School District.
The Caroline Street Elementary School principal is the highest-paid principal in the district, making $127,219 in 2011, according to SeeThroughNY.com.
“We’re going to revisit that and see if there is something more comparable to his job,” Brunelle said, a study he said is “overdue for an update.”
He said Spychalski’s salary may be lowered.
“That is definitely a possibility,” he said. “It may not change … We don’t know yet.”…
