Lois DeFleur will retire as Binghamton University president in July, having worked tirelessly for 19 years to raise BU’s stature academically and athletically, only to be besieged in recent months by basketball-related problems that tarnished the school’s reputation.
DeFleur, 73, cited her impending marriage and her mother’s fragile health in revealing she plans to leave the university July 30 and move to Colorado.
“I feel very sad (about leaving),” she told reporters. But, “I feel very proud and excited about the next phase of my life.”
When she became president in 1990, DeFleur said her goal was to give Binghamton a higher national profile. She did that and more.
Among her many accomplishments, she expanded graduate and research programs, grew enrollment substantially, made BU a major economic player in the community, heightened the school’s profile and leadership role throughout the region and state, and moved the athletics program from Division III to Division I as the university built and opened a $33 million Events Center.
“This is wonderful news for President DeFleur, but she’ll be a very tough act to follow,” said Kathryn Madigan, who chairs the Binghamton University Council. “She has led the university in the national, and even the international, spotlight.”…..
