A report released by the Empire Center for Public Policy ranking the highest 20 and lowest 20 effective tax rates for regions across New York found nine Cayuga County municipalities have the lowest effective tax rates in the central New York region.
The report, based on tax figures from 2010, found town of Niles residents in the Moravia Central School District had the lowest rate among the Cayuga County towns or villages listed and third overall in central New York, with an effective tax rate of $22.30 per $1,000 of property value.
Niles appears on the list again at fifth overall, for those town residents who live within the Skaneateles Central School District paying an effective rate of $22.81 per $1,000.
Outside of Cayuga County, the town of Skaneateles had the lowest effective tax rate in central New York at $21.75 per $1,000 of property value for town residents in the Moravia Central School District and $22.25 per $1,000 of property value for residents in the Skaneateles Central School District.
Seneca Falls in Seneca County had the ninth-highest effective tax rate in the Finger Lakes region for 2010 at $46.24 per $1,000 of property value.
The Empire Center also ranked 73 city tax rates, which found Auburn ranked 33rd with a rate of $36.23 per $1,000 of property value.
The highest effective rate in central New York is in Oswego County. Residents of Fulton paid the highest rate in the region at $51.14 per $1,000 of property value….
