The Empire Center’s SeeThroughNY site is out with a database of 2009-2010 teacher pay and other school employee salaries. Westchester and Long Island dominate the list of highest average professional salaries along with the highest individual paychecks, topped by Commack Long Island Superintendent James A. Feltman, who retired in June making $657,970 — which includes a retirement payout in addition to a salary of $363,183 in the 2009-10 school year.
The searchable, updated list contains salaries of 402,896 public school employees outside of New York City. (NYC pay is in a separate database.)
One note: Average pay for all Teachers Retirement System employees for the 2009-10 was $52,882. That includes teachers, administrators and everyone else in the state TRS, which covers professional school employees, mostly teachers and administrators outside of New York City. That could also include substitutes who may have just worked a few days. Add in the non-professionals such as bus drivers, custodians and teachers aides, and the average is $45,923, according to Empire Center.
