A new report shows the largest community grant from New York lawmakers this year is nearly $2.3 million to Prisoners Legal Services of New York Inc., which helps indigent inmates.
The searchable report on the Empire Center’s Web site lists the grant from 34 Assembly members among 8,250 so-called member items approved by the Assembly and Senate. The pork-barrel spending in the 2009-2010 fiscal year totals $148.3 million, most handed out by majority Democrats.
Next largest are $2.1 million from Assemblyman Vito Lopez, a Brooklyn Democrat, to the Neighborhood Preservation Program; nearly $1.1 million from Assemblywoman RoeAnn Destito, a Rome Democrat, to Griffiss Local Development Corp.; and $875,000 from Sen. Ruben Diaz, a Bronx Democrat, to Hispanic Federation Inc.
