Each February, Cortlandt Deputy Town Attorney John Klarl looks forward to a fat check from the town — the proceeds from cashing in unused vacation days from the previous year. The benefit is lavished upon certain top town administrators in Cortlandt who were hired before 1995.
“It’s like Groundhog Day when I get the check,” said Klarl, who was hired to the part-time post in 1991.
Since 2008, Klarl, who works 24 hours a week, has liquidated 13 weeks of vacation, worth $16,693, according to town payroll records. Klarl recalled receiving these annual payments dating back to the 1990s; at that rate his vacation-day haul could well exceed $50,000…..
