North county residents who do not regularly have the opportunity to travel to Mayville for a monthly gathering of spenders may want to be at the Clarion Hotel and Conference Center in Dunkirk next week.
Chautauqua County’s Legislature, whose slogan should be, “We’re still working at doing nothing,” will be meeting at the facility at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday. For lawmakers, the first half of 2010 has dealt more with saving their jobs – and pay – by keeping the size of the Legislature at 25 despite strong public sentiment for it to be 19 or 15.
Other lawmakers are apparently working toward bridging the more than $18 million budget gap the county faces in 2011. But other than offering a retirement incentive and asking the state to keep the sales tax at 7.75 percent, nothing has happened…
