There is a sentence in the budget bills that appears to make it easier for retired police officers to double dip as school resource officers.
Current state law allows retired police to take both a full salary and a pension if they are approved by a vote of the state’s Civil Service Commission. That three-member board pushes local governments to prove they tried to hire someone who was not already retired. It appears the new law would allow workers to skip that step and be approved instead by the state education commissioner.
The state already allows plenty of retired officers to take both a pension and a salary this way, according to commission meeting minutes. Without approval, the law limits retirees to $30,000 in salary if they want to continue their full pensions….
