It no longer requires hours of time, knowledge of freedom of information laws and money for copying fees to inform yourself by reading official documents. All it takes is persistence and an Internet connection.
You may not know the title of the document you’re seeking, but odds are you can find it with some help from a good search engine.

The most useful site for information about state government spending is the one maintained by Empire Center for Public Policy, with comprehensive databases of state payroll, pensions, budgets, contracts and more (http://seethroughny.net).
The center, a project of the Manhattan Institute for Policy Research, is, according to its website, “dedicated to promoting freedom, opportunity and enterprise in the Empire State.”
The state itself makes an endless amount of information available, much of it pertinent to various aspects of daily life…..
