Sophie Finn Elementary School Principal Alvin Goren is retiring at the end of the school year.
Goren, who could not be reached for comment, was appointed to serve as Sophie Finn’s principal for 2010-11 after five-year Principal Anthony Erena took a retirement incentive offered by the district this summer.
When he was assigned to take over at Sophie Finn, which is one of four elementary schools a consultant recently told the school board could be closed or used differently, Goren had been assistant to the superintendent for math, science and technology, a position he had held since 2007.
Goren was the J. Watson Bailey Middle School principal for eight years before moving to the central office post, and his most recent available salary on the Empire Center’s SeeThroughNY database was $130,077.
Gretzinger last month said Goren’s central office job was not replaced when he was reassigned, saving the district $115,000.
Trustee David Fletcher said last week before the school board approved the retirement that the district was losing a highly regarded administrator at a time when he believes the district is “shy good curriculum administrators.”
Fletcher said he hopes Goren’s position is replaced and that he believes a business manager should also be hired so less of top administrators’ time will be consumed with day-to-day operations…
