Electricity.
In April 2026, New York’s average residential electricity price was 29.45 cents per kilowatt-hour (kWh). New York ranked 4th highest among the states (tied with Massachusetts) and 56 percent above the national average. Prices increased 3.15 percent from March and were 14.64 percent higher compared to a year ago.
Natural Gas. In April 2026, New York’s average residential natural gas price was $21.15 per thousand cubic feet, which is the 15th highest in the nation and higher than the U.S. average of $18.17. Prices increased 11.9 percent from March and were 15.83 percent more than a year ago.
Trends. In April 2026, New York’s average residential natural gas price reached its peak for the year, at $21.15 per thousand cubic feet, which is the 15th highest in the nation and higher than the U.S. average by 16.4 percent.

Electricity
In April 2026, New York ranked 4h-5th among all states in average residential electricity prices. At 29.45 cents per kWh, this was 56 percent above the U.S average.
New York vs. Largest States. New York’s prices were higher than those in Florida and Texas, but lower than those in California.
New York vs. Neighboring States. New York’s prices were higher than New Jersey, Pennsylvania, and Vermont, while staying on par with Massachusetts, but lower than Connecticut.
Month-on-Month Change. New York’s electricity price increased by 3.2 percent, while the national average increased by 1.5 percent.
Year-on-Year Change. Compared to April 2025, New York’s prices increased by 14.6 percent, faster than the U.S. average increase of 7.3 percent.
Intermediate-term. New York’s average electricity price has increased 67.9 percent since 2019, a leading rate in the nation, significantly faster than the national average.
Long term. As of April 2026, New York’s average residential electricity price was 10.62 cents per kWh higher than the U.S. average. New York’s electricity prices have consistently exceeded the U.S. average, and the gap has widened in recent years.
Natural Gas
In April 2026, New York’s average residential natural gas price reached its peak for the year, at $21.15 per thousand cubic feet, which is the 15th highest in the nation and higher than the U.S. average by 16.4 percent.
New York vs. Largest States. New York’s prices were higher than those in California, but lower than those in Florida and Texas.
New York vs. Neighboring States. New York’s prices were higher than those in Connecticut, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, and Vermont, but lower than those in Massachusetts.
Month-on-Month Change. New York’s prices increased by 11.9 percent, slightly higher than the national average.
Year-on-Year Change. Compared to April 2025, New York’s prices increased by 15.8 percent, more than the U.S. average of 12.4 percent.
Intermediate-term. Compared to 2019, New York’s average price increased by 74.9 percent, higher than the U.S. average of 67.5 percent.
Long term. As of April 2026, New York’s average residential natural gas price was $2.98 per thousand cubic feet higher than the U.S. average, or 16.4 percent higher. Over the full period shown, New York prices have generally tracked national trends while remaining above the U.S. average.
Data notes. As the U.S. Energy Information Administration states, “EIA does not directly collect retail electricity rates or prices. However, using data collected on retail sales revenues and volumes, we calculate average retail revenues per kWh as a proxy for retail rates and prices. Retail sales volumes are presented as a proxy for end-use electricity consumption.” Similarly, for natural gas, EIA claims, “Price data are representative of prices for gas sold and delivered to residential, commercial, and industrial consumers. These prices do not reflect average prices of natural gas transported to consumers for the account of third parties or “spot-market” prices… All average prices… are computed by dividing the reported revenue by its associated sales volume.”
