According to new legislative expenditure data from SeeThroughNY — a website supported by Empire Center for Public Policy, a nonprofit think tank — New York’s State Legislature spent more than $102 million during a six month period ending in March 2013.
Ranked by office expenditures, highest-spending members in the Senate and Assembly for the most recent period available were Senator Dean Skelos (R-Long Island) at $477,558 and Assemblyman Richard Gottfried (D-Manhattan) at $437,762, respectively, according to SeeThroughNY. Office expenditures for Assemblyman Joe Morelle — who represents Irondequoit and Brighton — ranked 11th on the list at $272,075 for the six month period. Office expenditures for State Sen. Michael Nozzolio — who represents part of Ontario County and Wayne County in the 54th District — ranked 16th on the New York State Senate Office Expenditures list at $378,185.
While the data do include Senate and Assembly member and staff wages, it does not account for benefit costs, which can exceed 30 percent of an employee’s annual wages.
