The average tax rate across the Capital Region is lower than average, but a few municipalities stray from the average rate of $24.68 per $1,000 of a property’s assessed values. Schenectady has the highest effective tax rate in 2013, $43.58, according to a recently released report by the Empire Center for Public Policy, an independent research organization in Albany. A home valued at $160,250 would have paid $6,984 in taxes. Read More

New York's local property tax cap would be made permanent under the Senate Republican version of a new state budget. From the taxpayers' perspective, it's very encouraging to see the Senate make a high-profile move to line up on this issue beside Gov. Cuomo, who already has promised to seek the cap's permanent enactment. Read More

This community in the Adirondack foothills has two churches, one diner, a museum of rural memorabilia, the only covered bridge in Saratoga County and the Plateau Sky Ranch, a private airport. It doesn’t have a bank or a pizzeria, and there are no doctors or dentists. There are no public water or sewer systems in its 60-square miles, and just 16 street lights.
